The City of Conway Animal Services is accepting applications for a Part Time Veterinarian. This position provides veterinary medical care for animals housed at Conway Animal Services, including examinations, diagnosis, treatment, surgery, and preventative care. The Veterinarian also supports the shelter’s adoption and rescue programs by ensuring animals receive appropriate medical treatment and are prepared for placement into permanent homes.

This position works closely with Animal Services staff to promote animal health, public safety, and responsible animal welfare while maintaining compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Examine, diagnose, and treat shelter animals.
  • Perform spay and neuter surgeries and other routine veterinary procedures.
  • Administer vaccinations, medications, and emergency medical treatment.
  • Evaluate animals for adoption, rescue transport, and other placement opportunities.
  • Perform heartworm testing and other diagnostic procedures.
  • Issue health certificates and Certificates of Veterinary Inspection as required.
  • Evaluate abused or neglected animals and provide professional testimony when necessary.
  • Develop and maintain shelter medical treatment protocols.
  • Monitor the health of the shelter population and recommend disease prevention measures.
  • Maintain accurate medical and controlled substance records.
  • Collaborate with Animal Services staff to ensure quality animal care.
  • Assist with animal transport and adoption medical requirements.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD), or equivalent veterinary degree required.
  • Current, active, and unrestricted Arkansas veterinary license required.
  • Must maintain all required professional licenses and continuing education requirements.
  • Experience in shelter medicine, surgery, emergency medicine, or high-volume spay and neuter procedures is preferred.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Current Arkansas Veterinary License in good standing.
  • DEA Registration for controlled substances.
  • Valid Arkansas Class D Driver’s License.
  • USDA National Veterinary Accreditation (Category I or II) preferred.

 

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a veterinary clinic and animal shelter environment with frequent exposure to animals, animal waste, cleaning chemicals, medications, anesthetic agents, infectious diseases, and zoonotic hazards. Employees must follow established safety, sanitation, and infection control procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment.

This position requires standing, walking, bending, lifting, and safely handling animals weighing up to 100 pounds with assistance as necessary.
