The City of Conway is accepting applications for an Equipment Operator I position within the Sanitation Department. This position plays a critical role in citywide sanitation services and supports daily operations at the recycling center and landfill facilities.

This is an entry-level position responsible for operating and maintaining heavy equipment, assisting with roadway and drainage projects, moving materials, and supporting multiple sanitation facility operations while maintaining a safe and professional work environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate a variety of heavy equipment in compliance with department safety policies and procedures
  • Transfer, spread, cover, load, and compact waste or soil materials
  • Conduct routine equipment inspections and preventative maintenance
  • Move and position materials using material handling equipment
  • Assist with roadway and drainage construction and maintenance projects
  • Communicate professionally with public visitors and customers
  • Work independently and as part of a team to meet operational needs
  • Assist in multiple operational areas including recycling, landfill working face, yard waste, and customer convenience areas
  • Maintain clean, safe, and functional work areas
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Specialized training and/or experience in equipment operation preferred
  • Zero (0) to six (6) months of related experience and/or training preferred
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arkansas Driver’s License
  • Class 1A Solid Waste Management Facility Operator License required within six (6) months of hire if assigned to landfill operations
  • Class 1B Solid Waste Management Facility Operator License required within eighteen (18) months of hire if assigned to landfill operations
  • Ability to safely operate heavy equipment and machinery
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision
  • Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers and the public
  • Must be self-motivated, dependable, and willing to work in various weather conditions

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily outdoor work environment
  • Frequent exposure to loud noise, moving mechanical parts, vibration, weather conditions, fumes, airborne particles, and uneven terrain
  • Frequent standing, walking, climbing, bending, stooping, crouching, and lifting
  • Must be able to frequently lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds
